HOLLYWOOD: "Knots Landing" star Joan Van Ark joined five other Hollywood celebrities as a competition judge at the 1999 Reese's Gymnastics Cup. The event, which was produced by USA Gymnastics, took place on Saturday, January 16, 1999, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona. The event was later broadcast by NBC Sports.
The 1999 Reese’s Gymnastics Cup was a “Pro-Am” style competition which featured such 1996 Olympic champions as Amanda Borden, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu, as well as current National Team athletes. The gymnasts were paired into teams and competed in routines to music and theatrical lighting. Three teams of both men and women competed along with one rhythmic team.
This marked the first time that celebrity judges were incorporated into the event. Taking a page from figure skating's successful translation to entertainment spectacle, the move was designed to raise the marquee value of the event and attract new viewers to the sport. Celebrity judges, who chose both male and female winners, included: James Avery ("Fresh Prince of Bel Air"); Stephen Root ("NewsRadio"); Danny White (NFL Hall of Famer); Sean Young ("Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"); and, platinum recording artist Mya, who put on a brief concert following the competition.
The Hollywood-Madison Group, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in celebrity endorsements and personal appearances was responsible for securing the celebrities.
