HOLLYWOOD: Diminutive actor, Verne Troyer - best known as Doctor Evil’s twin, Mini Me, in the Austin Powers’ movies - becomes the first celebrity to star in commercials for Charmin since the death last year of the company’s venerable spokesperson, Mr. Whipple.

Putting a new spin on the legendary “Squeeze the Charmin” campaign, Procter & Gamble has decided that, celebrities, not regular shoppers, will be the ones that can’t resist squeezing the Charmin. When a celebrity gets caught by the store clerk, they will respond in a way that is true to their famous personality, each one finding a clever, humorous way to outsmart the clerk.

Charmin has a long and storied history. First introduced in 1928, the brand along with its longtime spokesman, Mr. Whipple, has achieved iconic status in this country and around the world. When “Don’t Squeeze the Charmin” appeared in 1964, it became one of the most recognizable catch phrases in advertising history. By 1978, Mr. Whipple was named "best-known American," behind Reverend Billy Graham and former president Nixon.

The Hollywood-Madison Group, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in celebrity endorsements and personal appearances was responsible for securing the artist. Publicis produced the spots. Manning, Selvage & Lee Chicago manages the campaign.
