HOLLYWOOD: Academy Award winner, Whoopi Goldberg, made a special appearance recently on Japan's most popular hour-long variety series, "SMAP SMAP." And, she didn't have to go far to do it. The show was filmed entirely on location in Malibu as part of Fuji Television's 40th Anniversary celebrations.
"SMAP SMAP" is a weekly variety show featuring SMAP, the most popular comedy troupe in Japanese entertainment history. Roughly equivalent to NBC's "Saturday Night Live," the show features several short skits in which members of SMAP act and sing. The program has remained Japan's top-rated show since it was launched April 15th, 1996. Many celebrities have appeared on the show in Japan including, most recently, Quentin Tarantino.
Ms. Goldberg appeared in a segment called "Bistro SMAP." In this variation on an interview, a celebrity guest actually visits "Bistro SMAP." The segment features a cooking competition, as SMAP members are divided into two teams. During the taping, they prepare the food while the host interviews the guest. In the end, the guest tastes dishes from each group and declares a winner.
The Hollywood-Madison Group, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in celebrity endorsements and personal appearances was responsible for securing the artist. Zazou Productions, Inc. produced the show.
