William Shatner And Leonard Nimoy To Beam Down To RCA Championships

 HOLLYWOOD: The staff at the RCA Championships seem to have done what millions of fans could not; they have reunited Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, both stars of the original “Star Trek” series (now the most successful entertainment franchise in history), are scheduled to attend the RCA-sponsored tennis event, August 17-18, in Indianapolis.
Also scheduled to attend the finals, from Hollywood, are: Morgan Brittany (Dallas); Robert Conrad (“Wild, Wild West”/”Black Sheep Squadron”); Kim Cattrall (“Sex In The City”); “Alan Rachins (“L.A. Law”); Mimi Rogers (“Someone to Watch Over Me”) and, Dick Vitale, the venerable ESPN broadcaster. By coincidence, Kim Cattrall portrayed Spock’s lover in the successful movie, “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country”.
A leader on the men's ATP Tour, the RCA Championships has been awarded "Best Tournament of the Year" honors for eight consecutive years. A player and fan favorite, it remains one of the most popular events in men's tennis today. And news of this seems to have spread to Hollywood.
Following a successful partnership last year, which saw celebrity tennis players such as Rod Laver, Tracy Austin, Richard Anderson and Kristy McNichol participate in “Legends Weekend ‘95”, RCA again signed with The Hollywood-Madison Group, an entertainment marketing firm, this time to attract Hollywood stars to their main event.
Sarah Blume, Director of Charitable Activities, said: "Celebrities add a measure of entertainment to the event. And, of course, there is no denying the drawing power they have. It has always been part of our mandate to broaden the appeal of tennis and we feel that celebrities only help. We're happy to have The Hollywood-Madison Group working with us again to bring them to the tournament."
Each celebrity has donated movie memorabilia for the benefit of Riley Children’s Hospital, the tournament’s official charity. Some of the items that will be offered at the fund-raiser on August 10th, include: Planet Hollywood and “L.A. Law” crew jackets; an autographed copy of “I Am Spock”; and, a Star Trek: Generations movie poster signed by William Shatner.
