Scene and Heard - January 2005

Recognize that voice?

Celebrity voiceovers were bigger than ever in 2004. Studies about their effectiveness are scarce but it is widely accepted that celebrity voices strike an emotional cord with listeners and boost familiarity for the ads they back. Among the most prolific stars working behind-the-scenes last year: Alec Baldwin (AIG, Disney World, GE, Subaru); Jeff Bridges (Ameriquest, Duracell); Gene Hackman (Lowes, Oppenheimer Funds); and, Patrick Stewart (Astra-Zeneca, Goodyear, Credit Card Chip and PIN [U.K.]). Most surprising voiceovers of 2004? Julia Roberts for America Online and Robert Redford for United Airlines. From the "This is CNN" department, MSNBC tested former "Magnum P.I." star, Tom Selleck.
